Devon,
Until you manage to find the time and play in few tournaments you'll never know for sure. Less then perfect sportsmanship isn't the same as getting tanked. You're not always going to enjoy tournament games and without a doubt you're going to strongly dislike playing some army builds and players. Its unavoidable. At the end of the day you're still a young father and husband and 40K will still be just a game.
Unlike Yeeman I don't plan on winning any Sportsmanship awards in 2013 :-)

I for one would like someone to bring a list with 5 fliers. I would liek someone to bring the most broken list they can bring, simply for the fact because I think I can beat them.
I think someone who brings 5 fliers to the game at 1250, isn't relying on any type of skill to win the games. They will be running purely on the list. When shit hits the fan, they will panic, make mistakes and be taken apart piece by piece.
I know it is easier for some armies to deal with certain builds, but everyone know can shoot fliers and the such. To beh onest I plan on bringing a 1250 version of my BAO list. It includes 2 fliers and my huge Beast squad. No allies however.
I think the CoC and Sportsmanship will all be based on who you play. The things I mark my oponents down on are always player conduct things. I have never marked them down because I thought their list was "OMFG NASTY SAUCE!" If someone can build a great list, play it with some tactics and not just roll dice by the plenty, and they beat me, then I won't mark them down for an army list.
My approach to 40k is rather simple, I believe wholeheartedly that i can beat any army that anyone puts on the tabletop at any given time, period. Notice I said army, not player. Because it is the player that makes the army, not the other way around. You could have the best list in the world, but if you don't deploy properly, or move in the correct direction, or target prioritize, I will beat you straight up. There are members in our group that build the grossest lists they can think of, but have no tactics when it comes to playing. Guess what? They lose!
I am sure people will disagree, but I really do try and build a balanced list everytime I go to a tournament. I dont want to fight the Rock to my Scissors and have no way of winning the game. I am sure that when people look at my army lists they think I built some super-ultra Megatron list that makes me a dickhead. But if you analyze it, I have Flier support, AI with Venoms, and AT with Fliers and a Ravager, and CC with Beasts. But if you look at my lists and just see Venoms and Fliers and a Farseer, then you are blinded by things that you assume to be OP or broken or yada yada yada. Truth is, all of my lists work well together and try to cover all bases.
If you really look at it, there is nothing that my army will excell at. 3 Venoms is hardly Venom Spam, but they provide enough AI to put pressure on units. I have two Voidravens for flier support, I could spam 3, but it leaves me vulnerable first turn. AT is helped by a Ravager and the 2 Voidravens. The Beasts are the catch all but against fliers.
I am looking forward to the CoC. I am sure people will tank others in Sportsmanship. I am sure others will bring nasty lists. But how good will it feel when you beat a 5 flier list? How good is it going to feel when I play Steve and table his ass Turn 2 or 3? It will feel nice.
If your oponent is a dick, mark him down. if he is shady with dice rolls or doesnt provide an army list, mark him down. Again, I wont mark anyone down for a list that they bring. I expect to see 5-6 Necron fliers out there coming from several players. I am sure the Mr. Casey McNamera who only plays the army of the month will bring Necron Fliers and probably win with them. Good for him. People will like him less if he does. But I hope I play him, just so I can have the chance to beat him.
If you want to build the grossest army, then go for it. But we have won tournaments in the past without sinkign to others' levels and building gross lists (and yes you couldi n the CoC last year) but we didnt. Bringing 9 War Walkers, 5 Necron fliers, or 3 Manticores wont win you the tournament.
Also, Devon... Come play in the CoC. Especially at 1250, there will be 100 people there. It is much different than playign me or Dan the man. I was surprised my first tournament because the only person I played against was Jason for the longest. It will be eye opening in the sense that people are douchers. They will cheat. They will be dicks to you. But do what I do and dont stand forthat shit. Someone wants to try and cheat say NO! Too many times people roll over for bullies and let them slide on things. Know your rules, know their army lists, and read up on codexes, codexi, or whatever the plural form of codex is. That is the easiest way not to be cheated.
I will admti I do not know all of the rules. I do not know all of the rules in every codex. Do I know majority of the rules? Yes. Do I know a lot from multiple codexes? Yes. If you dont know the BRB rules or Codex rules for armies, people will cheat you, they will lie to you, an you will lose. Preventable by reading up on rules and as many codexes as you can.
No more rant from me. Im off to breakfast! Plus I think I have carpal tunnel in my right hand.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
